Are Suppressors Worth It? Choose The Right One For You!
Are suppressors worth it? Yes, yes they are.
Well, that was easy!
But seriously, figuring out if a suppressor is worth it or not is a question that gets asked a lot. There are a bunch of different things to factor in, consider, weigh the pros and cons, and more before committing to buying a suppressor.
In a perfect world, we’d say that everyone should buy a suppressor – or two or twenty – but we don’t live in a perfect world. As much as we’d like to welcome you into #SilencerNation, the truth is that a suppressor might not be worth it … for you personally … at this moment in time. But hey, that might change in the future.
So without further ado, let’s answer the question – are suppressors worth it?
What is a Suppressor Used For?
Before deciding if you should buy a suppressor, you should probably understand what they are, what they do, and what they’re used for.
When you fire a round, burning gas builds up pressure behind the bullet and thrusts it down your bore. When the bullet leaves, a burst of host gas exists behind it, releasing a loud noise.
In comes the suppressor (or silencer). A suppressor slows down the gas by redirecting it through a series of baffles before it can escape the silencer. This allows any unburnt powder to finish burning off, which reduces muzzle flash. It also gives the gas more time to slow down and cool, so that when it does escape the silencer, it’s moving slower and under less pressure, which means it’s also quieter.
What Are the Benefits of a Suppressor
There are a lot of different reasons why you should buy a suppressor, but here are three of our favorite benefits that make a suppressor worth it.
As was explained above, suppressors bring down the decibels that you hear each and every time a gun is shot. Making less noise while shooting is beneficial if there are a lot of people at the shooting range if you’re out hunting, or simply if you’re trying to do everything possible to preserve your hearing.
An extra benefit of suppressors is that they reduce the felt recoil when a gun is fired. Since there’s less recoil, both you and the gun are moving around less than you would without a silencer. That reduction in movement helps you to make more accurate shots.
Shooting suppressed is simply a ton of fun. Seriously, we’ve never met anyone who shot suppressed for the first time and then turned around with a frown on their face. It just makes the entire shooting experience a lot more enjoyable.
Suppressed vs. Non-Suppressed Firearms
There’s certainly nothing wrong with shooting non-suppressed firearms. In fact, most gun owners go their entire lives having never shot a suppressed firearm, let alone owning their own personal suppressor. It could be due to cost, paperwork, time, or any other number of reasons.
Whatever the case, both suppressed and non-suppressed firearms have a place in the gun community. The more the merrier!
If, however, you’ve decided that a suppressed firearm is something you want in life, the next thing to know is what it takes to get a suppressor.
The Process of Getting a Suppressor
Now that you know why you should buy a suppressor, let’s go over some of the things you can expect when you buy a suppressor.
How Much Does A Suppressor Cost?
The cost of a suppressor varies depending on the model. Some cost as little as $300-$500 while others can cost more than $1,000. It all depends on the caliber rating, build materials, intended use, and more.
One thing that doesn’t vary is the cost of the tax stamp, which is set at $200. You’ll have to add that cost to the final cost of your suppressor.
How Long Does It Take To Buy A Suppressor?
Buying a suppressor is not like buying a gun. There’s a good bit of extra paperwork (including photos and fingerprints) that have to be submitted at the time of purchase. Then, you’ve got to wait for the ATF’s NFA branch to approve your purchase. With the recent launch of eForms, wait times have come down significantly, but they’re still not almost instantaneously like it is for most firearm purchases. Instead of people waiting a year or more, most people are seeing wait times around 90 days.
You can check our website for the most up-to-date wait times.
How Long Do Suppressors Last For?
Suppressors last a long time. As long as you take care of it and don’t do anything that it isn’t designed to do, there’s no reason for your suppressor not to last your entire lifetime. In fact, it’s entirely possible (and likely) that your suppressor will outlive you and bring suppressed joy to plenty of other people before reaching the end of its service life.
Buying Online vs. In-Store
These days, everything can be done online – including buying a suppressor.
If you’re the kind of person who likes driving to the local gun shop to do your research, check out different models, submit purchase paperwork, then come back yet again to pick up your suppressor, then, by all means, go to a store is the right way to buy for you.
On the other hand, if you’d prefer to do everything – and we mean everything – from the comfort of your own home, then buy online with Silencer Central. We’ll handle all of the paperwork for you and then mail your suppressor right to your front door once it’s been approved.
Is a Suppressor the Right Choice For You?
Even though there’s no one suppressor that can do it all, there are a ton of different makes and models on the market for you to choose from, and many of them are quite versatile.
The best way to figure out which suppressor will fit your needs is to make a basic list of the following:
- What guns do you want to suppress?
- How many different calibers do you want to suppress?
- What’s your budget?
Answering these few simple questions will help you start narrowing down which suppressors are right for you and which ones you can remove from your consideration.
