Can you use a .30-Caliber Suppressor with 5.56?

One of the most common questions we get about suppressors is whether or not shooters can use a .30 caliber suppressor with a 5.56 chambered firearm. The short answer is yes; you can use a .30-caliber suppressor on a firearm chambered in 5.56/.223 Rem.  Let’s dive a little deeper. Let's answer some frequently asked questions about whether a .30-caliber suppressor will work with a 5.56=chambered firearm.

The popular suppressor sizes

As you might have guessed, .30 caliber is the most popular suppressor size. Many of the popular suppressors on the market will handle any .30-caliber cartridge, from .308 Win through .300 Win Mag. Some will take the more powerful cartridges, like .300 WBY and .300 RUM. These suppressors will handle anything smaller in diameter as well, including 5.56, .223 Rem., .270, 6.5 CM, 7mm Rem Mag, and the popular PRC cartridges. Most .30-caliber suppressors will also work with rimfire cartridges, too.

Next in line will be the .223/5.56 class of suppressors. These are perfect for the 5.56 and are often divided between being designed for tactical use, versus hunting designs. These suppressors will also handle the rimfire calibers. A few will take on the higher-pressure specialty .22-caliber hunting calibers, like .22-250. Always check the owner’s manual to be sure.

Not recommended for 5.56

Rimfire suppressors are the next most popular size to the .30-caliber cans. Even though the diameter of a 5.56 bullet is roughly the same as a .22. Rimfire suppressors cannot handle the pressure of a 5.56/.223 rem cartridge. Rimfire cans can take on all of the .22 variants (.22LR, .22WM, etc.) as well as the .17s. Some can handle the 5.7x28mm cartridge, but that is as close as these will get to handling a 5.56.

Pistol calibers, such as 9mm and .45 ACP, make up the next class of suppressors. These are cans designed for pistol shooting and many have pistons (Nielsen Devices) that help the suppressor function with the pistol.

Big bore suppressors, get lumped into the next category. These are the suppressors designed for anything above the .30-caliber range. This includes the popular .46-caliber cans for rifles, such as a .45-70 Govt. It also covers the .338, .350, and .50 caliber suppressors.

Shotgun suppressors are a growing category, but with small range of options. More are coming all the time, though and you can expect to see more of these highly specialized suppressors coming shortly.

Is a .30-caliber suppressor going to be quiet?

As long as the firearm is .30-caliber or smaller, you can use a .30 caliber suppressor and experience great performance.

The short answer is yes, a .30-caliber suppressor will be hearing safe with a 5.56 firearm. They are designed to handle much larger bullet and cartridge combinations, often with more powder behind the projectile. You will experience very good hearing protection performance from a .30-caliber suppressor with your 5.56/.223 Rem. Firearm.

Why you should consider a .30-caliber suppressor for a 5.56

Versatility is the key thing to keep in mind here. A .30-caliber suppressor can be used on a wider range of firearms than a .223-caliber suppressor can. If you have several firearms and want a suppressor that will work on all of them, you can go with a .30-caliber suppressor. Just stay under the caliber size limit.

Where you may run into issue is with using larger suppressors, such as a .46-caliber can. They will still suppress the 5.56, but there will be more sound produced than with a .30. It is simple physics. The open space for the bullet to pass through is considerably larger in the .46-caliber suppressor, so that is more space for sound to escape.
