Essential Deer Hunting Gear for the Upcoming Season
October 10, 2025
Most deer hunters have two seasons - deer season and getting ready for deer season. While we may have months to scout, plan, and prepare for the upcoming season, there are always a few things you may have forgotten about that can have a serious impact on how successful your deer season is. Even the most experienced hunter should read on and see what we feel are the Essential deer hunting gear items that can improve your season.
1. Hunting Rifle Suppressor
Okay, we might be a little biased on this one, but adding a suppressor to your hunting rifle is a really good idea. A hunting rifle suppressor is an essential tool for anyone who is heading out on a deer hunt this fall, and once you try one, you'll agree with us.
Having a suppressor provides you with all sorts of benefits on your hunt, such as:
There is a wide range of hunting suppressors that can make your deer season more enjoyable. You won't find a better selection anywhere than at Silencer Central. We have what you want, in stock, and ready to go. We walk you through the paperwork and will ship your suppressor to your front door. It doesn't get any easier.
You may hear of some hunters who will proudly say that they spend more on their optics and suppressor than they do on the rifle itself. While we don't always agree to that end, there are some sweet rifles out there that are very cost-effective. What rifle is best for deer hunting is like asking who makes the best truck - it's an argument that has no right answer, but hunters will debate it until the cows come home.
What makes for a good deer rifle?
Get something that you're comfortable shooting and can shoot well. Bullet placement is key to a successful deer hunt, and any bullet, put in the right place will fill your tag. If you need some ideas for rifles, we suggest looking at one from Weatherby, Browning, Bergara, Winchester, Ruger, Springfield Armory, or Henry. And that's just to name a few. These companies all make rifles that come with a threaded barrel, perfect for a suppressor. (And if they don't, we have a barrel threading service that can get you squared away with precision.)
3. Quality optics
Of course you have to be able to see what you're shooting at and be precisely on target. For that, you need a quality scope. It is really important to have a scope that will never fail you at the time of the shot. Here are some of our key rifle scope requirements:
Multicoated glass for clarity
Proper eye relief for a full view of your sight window
Great light transfer
We are proud to partner with Vortex Optics and feature their products. They have a full range of high-quality scopes, binoculars, rangefinders, red dots, and spotting scopes.
Where the shot is placed makes a big difference in how well your ammunition will handle filling your tag.
Ammunition and bullet choice play a big part in a successful deer hunt. You want a bullet that expands on impact and carries the best amount of energy possible, but let's be real. Killing a deer isn't that hard, or at least it shouldn't be. Whitetail deer are not overly tough animals and a bullet with even minimal characteristics should get the job done. But there are variables that make getting the right ammo very important - it's the variables that are key.
Get a bullet that expands and stays intact. Most modern hunting bullets will do this.
Look at the bullet design based on your expected maximum range.
Make sure your rifle likes the ammo. It is rarer now than it used to be, but some rifles are finicky with some ammunition, making repeatable accuracy more difficult.
5. Get in Gear
Clothing can make or break a deer hunt. Always have hunter orange on at least some part of your body. Make sure you follow regulations for where you are hunting in terms of how much to use. If the forecast calls for rain, which it often does this time of year, you can still have a very effective deer hunt in the rain as long as you have some rain gear to wear. Don't forget good, supportive boots as well as gloves and enough warm layers for the temperature.
Opinions vary on what is the best deer hunting rifle caliber, but know that any legal deer hunting caliber is going to do the job if you hit the vitals of the deer. Get something you're comfortable shooting and practice, practice, practice.
There are some definite pluses to using a suppressor for deer hunting. Your rifle will be more accurate and have reduced recoil - both good things. The sound reduction will protect your hearing and help give you a follow-up shot opportunity if you need it.
In theory, a mature whitetail buck will walk the same route, checking scrapes and rubs. If you see a deer one year, the 7 day rule is that that deer will walk the same route and check the scrapes within 7 days of doing it the year before. The theory is that if you see a deer on camera one year and want to hunt it the next season, be on that scrape route the seven days surrounding that first picture.
Scrapes are a main way deer communicate with each other. A buck will check a scrape multiple times, but the frequency is dependent upon the deer. You may see the same deer on camera multiple times per night checking the same scrape, or it may be only a weekly occurrence that changes during the rut. The key is that if you see a good buck that you want to pursue, be within range of the scrape and be prepared.
