A Shooter’s Guide to the Quietest .308 Win. suppressors
November 11, 2025Posted by derrek.sigler
The most popular hunting rifle caliber in the United States is the .30-06, followed closely by the .308 Win. For these calibers and many others, you want a .30-caliber suppressor to tame the report and make these rifles hearing safe. The question we get most often is, who makes the quietest suppressor for my .308 or .30-caliber rifle? Thanks to the 2025 TBAC testing, we know the answer.
What does the quietest mean?
When we get asked about who makes the quietest suppressor, it has a few variables to the answer. The idea seems simple. The quietest means it makes the least amount of sound. But is that at the muzzle? The shooter’s ear? Further down range? And one question that was asked that made a lot of sense was rather simple. Can you really tell the difference between two suppressors that are very close is actual decibel suppression? As in if one can cuts the sound of your .308 Win. by 38.4 Decibels, and the other suppressor cuts it by 38.5, can you really tell the difference?
How are decibels measured?
The decibel scale is logarithmic, meaning a sound with an intensity that is twice that of a reference sound corresponds to an increase of little more than three decibels. The logarithm starts at zero decibels where the intensity of the least perceptible sound, which is the threshold of hearing, means there is no sound. With this scale, a 10-decibel sound is 10 times the intensity of the reference sound, and a 20-decibel sound is 100 times the reference intensity, and so on. For firearms, the average sound of a gunshot is in the 140-160 decibel range. This depends upon some variables like ammunition, caliber, and the firearm in question. In other words, if you have really good hearing, you can tell the difference between a .5 and a .4 decrease in decibel levels. But a lot of us, especially us older people who already suffer some hearing damage as it is, can’t tellwith as much accuracy. I’d love to be able to say otherwise, but I liked too many loud, fun things when I was younger.
Don’t worry though. There are plenty of other factors that you can compare between the quietest .30-caliber suppressors. This includes weight, mounting options, price, and more.
The quietest .308 Win and .30 Caliber suppressors
You may be wondering why we list .308 Win. and .30-caliber suppressors together. To be fair, it is all .30 caliber. but the .308 Win. is pretty popular. When we say these are the quietest, it works well because at the TBAC Sound Summit, the test included the use of .308 Win rifles, as well as .300 Win. Mag,
Dead Air Nomad LTI XC
The Dead Air Nomad LTi XC uses an enhanced version of their Nomad baffles with a two-stage coaxial baffle system that uses new pressure-harnessing structures to regulate both low-pressure and high-pressure rounds. This also gives the LTi XC better sound reduction while keeping the weight down to just 9.9 ounces. When combined with a .308 Win. rifle, the sound suppression is outstanding. It is extremely quiet and was outstanding at the TBAC Sound Summit.
Like other Dead Air Nomad XC models, the “XC” in the name of Dead Air’s Nomad LTi XC denotes that this .30-caliber suppressor is perfect for cross country hikes in chase of game. The Ti in the name stands for the Grade 5 6A1-4V titanium used in the construction to keep weight low and strength high. It is the “L” designation that is the kicker here. It is a longer version of the Nomad XC series that adds additional sound suppression for your rifle, while still retaining the lightweight required for a true deep-country hunting can.
The Nomad LTi XC has a replaceable front cap, and the outer Grade 5 6A1-4V titanium shell has aggressive tooling built in to help with mounting. The LTi XC uses Dead Air’s Xeno adapter, but the modularity of the HUB socket allows for adapters to easily be swapped out with other HUB Adapters for flexibility.

The BANISH 30 GOLD-V2 is a terrific suppressor for the .308 Win. bolt-action rifle, but is the best of the BANISH line when it comes to the AR-10 platform. You would expect that Thunder Beast Arms would have a suppressor right in the mix for the title of quietest .30-caliber suppressor, and they do. What our customers say:
"Excellent noise and recoil reduction has functioned flawlessly on every host I've put it on including non adjustable gas block ar platforms that wouldn't run with some of my other cans. Mine actually weighed in a half oz under the listed spec. If you're in the market for a lightweight 30 cal silencer for hunting or fun get this one you won't regret it." - Alex
The SilencerCo Scythe STM is a great option when you want a quiet .308 Win. suppressor. If you need a durable, full-auto-rated suppressor for demanding applications, it's a pretty popular option and one we like a lot. Its modular, 17-4 stainless steel design allows for customization and is built to withstand high-volume fire. This is the stainless version of the Scythe Ti model and SilencerCo added it because people loved the Scythe, but wanted to be able to send more round downrange at one time.
Its modular design allows you to change the number of baffles to suit your needs, offering a trade-off between a shorter, more compact configuration and a longer one for maximum sound suppression. Obviously for the .308 and other .30-caliber rifles, we suggest the longer variation to make it the quietest it can be.
The Scythe STM can handle calibers from .223 Remington up to .300 RUM and is compatible with Bravo/HUB accessories, further increasing its versatility. The Anchor Brake significantly reduces recoil, helping you stay on target, too.
When you shoot a .308 Win, or any other .30 caliber rifle for that matter, the sound from the gunshot comes from the combustion of powder in the casing. This explosion pushes the bullet down the barrel and out of the muzzle. As the bullet passes from the muzzle, the expanding gases from the combustion escape, creating sound waves that we then hear.
A suppressor uses baffles to capture the energy from the explosion, taming the energy that travels to the ear. On average, a suppressor causes an average of a 30-decibel reduction in sound. As an example, if your firearm causes a 150-decibel sound, a suppressor makes that 120 decibels or less. The decibel threshold for damaging the human ear is 140, so this pushes the sound levels down to well-within that hearing safe decibel range. You won't get the ringing noise in your ear and the overall shock to your hearing system won't happen.

Will you have a more accurate .30-caliber rifle?
On average, the answer is a firm yes, you will have a more accurate .308 Win. rifle. For one, on average, a suppressor will actually add more velocity to your bullet as it exits the muzzle. the results are a small improvement in bullet drop at longer ranges. This is especially true with bolt-action rifles.
Will it reduce recoil in my .308 Win?
Again, the answer is yes. On average, we have seen a reduction in felt recoil across the board with all .30 caliber rifles when using a suppressor. As the energy from the explosion exits the barrel and enters the suppressor, the baffles, or baffling that absorbs the sound also absorbs a good chunk of the energy that comes back at you in the way or recoil. Instead of directing it straight back, it disperses it around the suppressor. This not only cuts down the felt recoil, but stabilizes the barrel, again making the rifle more accurate.
The BANISH 30 Gold-V2 is a superb .308 Win suppressor. It is the best option for AR-10 platform rifles and works very well with magnum calibers, like .300 Win Mag. Photos by Ryan Grant.
WHAT the quietest .308 SUPPRESSORs won't DO
We can't guarantee that using a suppressor will prevent hearing loss. Simply because the factors that go into hearing loss vary from person to person. There is no possible way anyone can say with certainty that you won't suffer hearing loss. Using a suppressor does help, especially when doing activities, like hunting. And there are other benefits, like recoil reduction and increases in accuracy. The "pros" outweigh the "cons" when it comes to suppressor use.
