A Look At Our Suppressors’ Decibel Reduction – Ranked
It should go without saying that people buy suppressors because they want to reduce the decibel level of a gunshot. Whether the driving factor is to preserve their own hearing, to avoid spooking wild game, or to be courteous to those around them, the end goal is all the same.
Since suppressors aren't exactly inexpensive, people want to get the most bang for their buck. Or, in this case, perhaps it's better to say that people want to get the least bang for the buck. That is, they want the best sound suppression and decibel reduction that their hard-earned money can buy.
Silencer Central can order and sell just about any silencer under the sun for you, but we wanted to take a closer look at our own line of suppressors and show you how they perform in terms of decibel reduction in a variety of circumstances on different firearms in different calibers.
What Is The Average Suppressor Decibel Reduction?
The main goal of using a suppressor for decibel reduction is to bring the level down to at least 140 decibels, which is what is considered to be hearing-safe. Anything higher than that and you risk hearing damage.
Hearing-safe levels are what suppressors strive to achieve because there is no such thing as a suppressor that will make a gun truly silent, no matter what Hollywood (or politicians) may tell you.
A suppressed .22 caliber firearm will be considerably quieter than a suppressed .308 caliber firearm simply because of their different decibel levels when fired unsuppressed.
On average, you can expect anywhere between 23 to 36 decibels of sound reduction when using a BANISH suppressor. Of course, the exact amount will vary depending on the type of gun, type of ammo, barrel length, shooting conditions, etc.
Our Best Suppressors By Decibel Reduction
In an effort to offer our customers the best suppressors money can buy, we set out to create our own line of suppressors. Enter the BANISH lineup. At present, we have seven different options: BANISH 22, BANISH 223, BANISH 30, BANISH 30 Gold, BANISH 338, BANISH 45, and BANISH 46.
While they're all great options, we'll go over the four most popular options for optimal decibel reduction for four different purposes.
AR Suppressor: BANISH 30
Specs
- Weight: 10 oz or 13 oz
- Length: 7" or 9"
- Finish: GunKote
- Materials: Titanium
- MSRP: $999
You might think of an AR being just a .223/5.56 caliber gun, and while those are the most prevalent calibers, they're far from the only ones. Lots of people are running ARs in .300 Blackout and even 7.62x39mm. To go that route, you'll need a .30 caliber suppressor like the BANISH 30. Luckily, the BANISH 30 performs great with the .223/5.56 round as well.
The BANISH 30 comes as a 9-inch suppressor holding eight baffles, but if you’ll be shooting suppressed in tighter, confined spaces, it can easily break down and assemble into a 7-inch configuration with six baffles.
This suppressor also weighs considerably less than most suppressors of similar size. In the full configuration, it weighs 13 ounces; in the short configuration, it weighs just 10 ounces. You’ll be hard-pressed to even feel it on your gun!
SBR Suppressor: BANISH 223
Specs
- Weight: 9 oz
- Length: 7"
- Finish: GunKote
- Materials: Titanium
- MSRP: $849
Most SBRs are built on the AR platform since the AR15 has quickly become one of the most popular rifles on the market. As a result, the BANISH 223 suppressor is optimized to run on that platform. As an added perk, it’s even rated for limited full-auto fire.
With a sound reduction of 38 decibels, the reduced report provided by the BANISH 223’s expansion tube and seven baffles will not only protect your hearing but also the hearing of anyone shooting around you.
Since size and weight are big concerns on most SBRs, you'll appreciate that the BANISH 223 is made of lightweight titanium weighing just 9 ounces and is only 7" in length.
Pistol Suppressor: BANISH 45
Specs
- Weight: 9.6 oz or 11 oz
- Length: 6.7" or 8.6"
- Finish: GunKote
- Materials: Titanium and Aluminum
- MSRP: $949
The BANISH 45 is a modular silencer specifically designed for handguns and pistol caliber carbines in calibers ranging from .45 ACP down to rimfire. Testing shows the BANISH 45 suppresses a 9mm pistol by 36 decibels – far more sound reduction than the competition.
Made of titanium for the ultimate combination of durability and weight reduction, the BANISH 45 is the lightest in its class at a mere 9.6 oz in the short configuration of 6.7”. You can also run it in the long configuration of 8.6” and still barely notice it’s on your gun because it weighs only 11 oz.
Rimfire Suppressor: BANISH 22
Specs
- Weight: 4.1 oz
- Length: 5 3/8"
- Finish: GunKote
- Materials: Titanium
- MSRP: $549
The BANISH 22 suppressor is designed for use with rimfire pistols and rifles chambered in .22 caliber and smaller. This includes .22 Hornet, .17HMR, and even 5.7×28. It’s even rated for full-auto!
Using 1/2×28 threads for direct attachment, the BANISH 22 is made of lightweight titanium, weighs just 4.1oz, is 1” in diameter, and is only 5 ⅜” long. This means you’ll barely even notice that the BANISH 22 is on the end of your gun – except when it comes to sound reduction.
Tests have shown that the BANISH 22 brings sound down to about 120 decibels, which is just 10 decibels more than a BB-gun. Essentially, this is as close to “Hollywood quiet” as you can get.
