Silence Your Shotgun with the Salvo 12 Shotgun Suppressor

For a long time, people didn’t think it was possible to have a silencer on a shotgun. In fact, they way shotguns work pretty much ensured that for over a century, there would be no silenced shotguns. But that was then, and this is now, and the Salvo 12 Shotgun Suppressor is a reality!

We’re here to answer your questions about the world’s first widely-available shotgun suppressor. Use these links to navigate the guide:

An Introduction to SilencerCo’s Salvo 12

SilencerCo’s Salvo 12 shotgun silencer is a triumph of engineering and vision. As the first commercially viable shotgun silencer, the Salvo 12 is unique in many different ways. Designed to be modular and mount using the same attachment point as a choke tube, the Salvo 12 can make your shotgun hearing-safe, which is a real game changer on the range or in the field.

Capable of being used on any kind of shotgun action, the Salvo 12 weighs just a bit over 2 pounds and can be configured to various lengths to suit different needs and situations. Plus, the Salvo 12 can be used with everything from slugs to birdshot without significant disruption of the shot pattern or a change in accuracy.

Can Shotguns Have Silencers?

Until recently, the answer was a resounding no. That doesn’t mean people haven’t tried, but it took over 100 years for a commercially viable shotgun silencer to hit the market.

The problem with putting a silencer on a shotgun always hinged around two things. First, that shotguns throw shot. The basic technology of a silencer does not lend itself well to dealing with a shot charge and wadding. The second problem involved the fact that shotguns fire all kinds of different loads from tiny birdshot to massive slugs, all from a large bore.

Large bores are hard enough to suppress without also having to deal with the fact that you’re running shot through the silencer too. So the question has has always been less “can shotguns have silencers?” and more “how can we make a silencer for a shotgun?” Fortunately, SilencerCo found the answer to that question.

Why Use a Suppressor on a Shotgun?

Guns are loud, and shotguns are no exception to that rule. With a properly-configured Salvo 12, you can turn your thundering beast of a scattergun into a polite, easy-shooting, quieter shotgun. You’ll enjoy it, and so will everyone and everything else around you. Well, except maybe the birds who don’t hear you coming…

Benefits of Shooting Suppressed

Here are just a few of the reasons why adding the Salvo 12 suppressor to your shotgun may be the smartest move you make this hunting season:

You’ll Protect Your Hearing

Hearing protection is one of the most important reasons to own and use any silencer. Shotguns can generate sound up to 175 decibels or higher. This means even one shot fired from an unsuppressed shotgun can permanently destroy hearing without adequate protection!

The Salvo 12 can reduce noise to under 140 decibels, which is the threshold for safe levels of noise. Because the Salvo 12 is user-configurable for different lengths, not all configurations on all guns with all loads can drop below 140 decibels. But it is important to note that any reduction in sound is a net positive. Even if you opt for a shorter configuration, you are still gaining many advantages like including recoil reduction and improved accuracy.

You’ll Reduce Recoil

We’ve all experienced the pain and discomfort of really stout shotgun loads. The Salvo 12 is a proven recoil reduction tool that makes even the heaviest magnum loads easier to shoot.

Because the Salvo 12 works by trapping and containing muzzle gasses that cause felt recoil, you’ll find shooting your shotgun is easier and more comfortable. In fact, there’s no better way to actually reduce the felt recoil of a shotgun than with a Salvo 12 shotgun silencer.

You’ll Reduce Noise Pollution

Nobody loves a loud gun. During hunting season the woods become noisy – sometimes irritatingly so, and the noise stresses out humans and animals alike. Not only does this make it harder to share the fields and forests with non-hunters, but it also makes hunting harder. And shooting ranges benefit from quieter shooting too!

Home and Personal Defense

Shooting a shotgun indoors amplifies the sound and can further damage your hearing. But with a Salvo 12 shotgun silencer, you only have to worry about protecting your family and home.

Simply install the Salvo 12 on your favorite pump action or semi-auto home defense shotgun and it will be ready should you ever need it.

Law enforcement officers also benefit from a silenced shotgun, particularly when operating inside buildings where the muzzle blast can be dangerous and distracting.

Hunting with a Suppressed Shotgun

The Salvo 12 offers three key benefits to bird hunters.

  1. It reduces noise pollution. Less noise pollution means less spooked game. You are less likely to see entire flocks of birds take off in fright after firing a shot.
  2. It protects your hearing, your hunting party’s hearing and the hearing of your bird dogs. We’ve already discussed the benefits of a silencer as a hearing protection tool, and it really pays off when hunting.
  3. It improves your situational awareness. Most hearing protection makes it hard to hear game, predators or other people moving in the woods. Using a Salvo 12 shotgun silencer eliminates that problem.

How to Attach the Salvo 12

You might wonder how a shotgun silencer attaches. The Salvo 12 uses a neat little adapter that replaces a threaded choke tube. Simply remove your choke tube, screw in the adapter, and then screw the Salvo 12 to the adapter. That’s it! Naturally, the adapter is available for all popular and common choke threads.

Pros and Cons

Nothing is perfect, and all silencers are a series of compromises designed to achieve a particular end goal. That means they have a lot of good things, and maybe some things you don’t like about them. Let’s take a closer look.

Pros

  • It’s a shotgun silencer!
  • Reduce recoil and muzzle climb
  • Improve accuracy
  • Lightweight construction
  • Modular design – adjust for your gun and shooting needs

Cons

  • An added two pounds on the end of your muzzle may affect some types of shooting.
  • Modular design means not all configurations may deliver true hearing safe protection. You may still have to use hearing protection with the shortest configuration when shooting heavy loads.
  • Requires barrel to be threaded for choke tubes. Some shotguns are not threaded or may not be practical to thread for choke tubes.
  • High cost. At about a thousand dollars, not everyone is ready for a shotgun silencer
  • Not legal to hunt with in 10 US states.
